Officials confiscate underage puppies for sale in Montclair Jannise Johnson, Staff Writer MONTCLAIR - Inland Valley Humane Society & SPCA officers seized puppies from a home.
Close to 10 puppies considered too young to be sold were taken from a house in the 9700 block of Kimberly Avenue on Friday, according to an SPCA news release. Humane Society officers went undercover to buy the pit bull and Jack Russell terrier puppies. Brian Sampson, animal services supervisor, approached the sellers and posed as someone interested in buying the puppies. Beth Les, Humane Society cruelty investigator, was in charge of the operation as well as overseeing the confiscation of the puppies, according to the release. The puppies were taken to the Humane Society in Pomona where they will be treated for any medical problems they might have. After medical treatment, the animals will be available for adoption. Humane Society investigators intend to press charges against the people responsible for the attempted sales. Teresa Cox, kennel supervisor and board member of the West End Shelter for Animals in Ontario, said the issue of backyard breeders selling puppies in the area is a big one. "It is a significant problem," she said. "Especially in the toy breeds like Chihuahuas and poodles." Shelter workers have seen puppies brought in for vaccinations by people who are under the belief the animals they just purchased are at least 10 to 12 weeks old. But the staff can tell the puppies are only 5 weeks old because they don't have a full set of teeth. The youngest a puppy should be sold is at 8 weeks, Cox said. A responsible breeder will make sure the dogs have had at least one set of vaccinations, officials said. [Back to News] |
